Talking PointHello - a year to help all children communicate

Ages and stages

This section of the site looks at the typical development that most children experience. Of course all children are different, so these are meant as a guide. It is organised into age groups to help you find the information that is most appropriate for each child.

Within each age group you will find:

  • Information about how children typically develop communication skills.
  • Tips for supporting langauge at this age.
  • Things to look out for - difficulties that some children have at these ages.

If you are concerned about a child, you should speak to the SENCO in your setting and of course the parents. Seek the advice of a speech and langauge therapist. You can find details of your local SLT here.

Use our progress checker to check the progress of a child. If you have specific questions, use our help and advice tool.
