Talking PointHello - a year to help all children communicate

Things to look out for

Speech and language skills develop from a very early age. However, some children do not develop the early skills they need.

This can be very difficult to spot from an early age. However, you should talk to a GP or health visitor if your child does not:

  • Respond to noises by 9 months.
  • Point to things they are interested in by 1 year.
  • Try to gain your attention by making noises by 1 year. This could be through eye contact, facial expressions or reaching.

If you have any concerns, you should speak to your health visitor, GP or paediatrician.

Also use our help and advice tool for more support. You can also check your child’s progress here.
